About the conference
This conference will bring together teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, and mental health providers to grapple with the phenomenon of bullying and its link to school violence. Elementary and middle school experts will share their frontline responses to the challenge of creating and maintaining schools that are emotionally, socially, and physically safe for all students.

The conference will address:

Bullying in school

  • Isn't it just a normal part of growing up?
  • Doesn't it teach children how to stand up for themselves?
  • How is it linked to school violence?

School climate

  • What is it, really?
  • Who is responsible for a school's climate?
  • How is the climate created and maintained?
  • Where do teachers find the time and energy for "one more thing" and still find time to teach?

Topic areas include but are not limited to:

  • Perspectives on bullying: elementary and middle school years
  • Faces of childhood aggression: frustration, mistake, experiment, or bully--and how to tell the difference
  • Impact of bullying: cost and loss to victims, bullies, spectators, school climate
  • Peer abuse and the seeds of violence
  • Legal trends in managing the school climate and in bullying/violence prevention
  • What can schools do? (hands-on, ready-to-use strategies for effective prevention)
