Developing Music Curricula

Credit: 24 hours of instruction = 2 credits, or 24 Act 48 hours

Description: This course will focus on the processes for developing music curricula that incorporate current theories, practices, materials, and research findings.
The students will work in “virtual school” teams to prepare a music curriculum. Each student will then design a course for a level and setting in his or her virtual school
curriculum. You could attend with other music faculty from your school and develop curricula for your school district!

Joanne Rutkowski, professor of music education and coordinator of music education programs, has been a member of the faculty since 1984. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, with particular emphasis on music learning and development, curriculum design, assessment, and music for children from birth through 12 years of age.
Rutkowski’s research on the nature of the child singing voice and the development of techniques and materials for enhancing the singing achievement of children in a classroom setting has been presented at state, regional, national, and international symposia and conferences. She has written articles for numerous journals, including the Journal of Research in Music Education, General Music Today, Update, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and Contributions to Music Education, and has published chapters in the Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, and The Musical Lives of Young Children and Early Adolescence: Perspectives on Research, Policy, and Intervention. She is also co-author of the MENC publication TIPS: The Child Voice. She is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. For six years she served on the national executive board of the Society for Research in Music Education.
