We're sorry to announce that the program has been canceled for this year.

Parents, this opportunity can help your children become acclimated to college life (perhaps at Penn State?) and really concentrate on improving their writing, an asset in both their high school and collegiate careers.

Note from the Directors

Dear Writers and Parents:
We began where you are: excited by language, driven to write down the details of our lives and the worlds — real and imagined — around us. As published writers and teachers of writing, we are thrilled to offer the Penn State Young Writers’ Workshop, an opportunity we dreamed of as teenagers. Here you can write, workshop, meet published authors, and chat late into the night about stories and authors and how to work your way back from “the butler did it.”

We want to encourage our young writers to ask questions, to engage their imaginations, to read and write more, to be part of a worldwide writing community that starts here at Penn State. So, if you have questions, please feel free to drop us a line. We will be happy to help in any way we can.

All the best,
Camille-Yvette and Sheila

Mission

The Young Writers’ Workshop strives to enrich young writers by:

  • introducing them to published authors and compelling literature
  • fostering a supportive writing community
  • developing students’ writing and critical faculties

Overview

The Penn State Young Writers’ Workshop offers exceptionally motivated young writers the opportunity to live and write in Happy Valley. The students will work with published authors and engage in workshops with like-minded students. For this two-week course in fiction writing the students will earn 4 college credits, which can be transferred to nearly any accredited college or university in the country. More important, we grant the time, the space, and the guidance for the students to seriously explore their own writing.

The young writers will also meet with their instructors (Penn State English Department faculty) outside of class for a one-on-one evaluation of their portfolios.
